The machinery is more efficient and more reliable in maintaining the integrity of the goods because it is not subject to human limitations and errors. Here are simple tasks that you should perform to keep your belt conveyor functioning optimally.

Take-up Adjustment

The tension of the conveyor belt system is an important aspect to consider in the maintenance of your machinery. The take-up adjustment is the process in which the tautness of the belt module altered to the original standards. In simple terms, this task ensures that the belt is pulled tight when it is leaving the drive unit. There is a take-up device incorporated in the system to make the adjustment easy so you should not overlook this task. You should note that there are potential extensive detriments which can result from negligence. A lax belt conveyor can cause jamming, inconsistent surges and even accelerated wear of other components due to the strain exerted when moving the belt.


The belt conveyor structure is designed for continued motion but their functionality can be compromised by friction. The internal components are serviced by bearings to ensure that the motion of the machinery is smooth and consistent. You should engage a serviceperson to oil these bearings periodically according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Some modern conveyor systems include lubricators which can be programmed to release the lubricants intermittently depending on the requirements. The resistance and friction developed without performance of this task will accelerate the wear of the machinery and may even cause breakdown.


Belt conveyors are exposed to different types of products during packaging, processing or manufacturing. Some materials are detrimental to the machinery if direct contact occurs during the operation. Such substances include acids, caustic alkalis, abrasives, industrial steel shot and paint. These substances will cause corrosion of the belt surface and pitting of internal components if the compounds penetrate. You can prevent damage by cleaning and decontaminating the surfaces regularly to remove hazardous materials.

You should also consider training your employees to handle the machines and the products on the conveyor properly. This will prevent damage due to overloading or improper placement of the goods.
